It keeps getting easier to find out what treasures MACE holds in its ITV regional news collection.
In January of this year we reported that MACE had been successful in bidding for funds from the Pilgrim Trust / Esmee Fairbairn Cataloguing Grants Programme to develop our in-line catalogue. In April Sandy Bent joined the MACE team with the job of transferring paper records relating to the collection on to our existing online database.
Before Sandy started the work our database contained less than 5,000 entries. Today the number of has risen to over 20,000.
In terms of the ITV collection this means that all of the news items that were produced by Midlands News between 1956 and 1969 and most of the ATV Today news items from 1964 through to 1973 are now searchable by web users. Which, ultimately means that people from across the Midlands and beyond can identify material they might be interested in and then get in touch with us to see it. Some of the catalogue entries even have clips that are already available to view online creating immediate access to a collection that was once so difficult to access.
There’s still a long way to go though as ITV’s regional newsroom used film until the early 1980s but every record that Sandy uploads is one more that the world can see.
