Today’s clip comes from March 1977 – the Stechford by-election. Mrs. Margaret Thatcher is in Birmingham to lend her support to the Conservative Party candidate. Mrs. Thatcher visits an air compressor factory, where she talks to workers and chats with shoppers in the local precinct where she meets butcher, Frank Maund.

Harold Wilson’s former press secretary, Joe Haines is also in Stechford to cover Mrs. Thatcher’s visit for a national paper.

Margaret Thatcher served as Prime Minister of the UK from 4 May 1979 to November 1990 and is the only woman to have held the post.
