The Prime Minister, James Callaghan MP, interviewed by Reg Harcourt regarding the theme of speech to be made in Birmingham and the main issues on which the General Election campaign of 1979 will be fought including inflation, industrial relations built up by his Government during their term in office, Government support for British Leyland and the effects of the past winter on the voter.

The general election of 3 May 1979 and is regarded as a pivotal point in 20th century British politics. The Conservatives under Margaret Thatcher defeated James Callaghan‘s incumbent Labour government in the first of four consecutive general election victories for the Conservative Party.
