‘Nottingham on Film’ available from MACE’s Website

Following swiftly on from the success of From ATVLand in Colour, MACE has now released Nottingham on Film. Produced by the Lincoln School of Media, Nottingham on Film is a compilation of films from 1920 and 1980.

Known as The Queen of the Midlands , Nottingham is an ancient city with a rich cultural and industrial history. The twentieth century saw rapid change for Nottingham, in the market square – the largest in England outside the capital and scene of many civic celebrations, in industry and transport, as well as in everyday life – and the new medium of film was there to record this change.

Nottingham on Film, produced and edited by acclaimed filmmaker Andy McKay and his team at the University of Lincoln s School of Media, pieces together rarely seen and newly restored film preserved at MACE.

Amongst the films are scenes of enjoyment at the Goose Fair, coronation celebrations, life on the shop floor in knitwear, lace, bicycles and tobacco; trade on the River Trent, and a wealth of news reports from ITV s regional news magazine programme, ATV Today. These include the opening of the Nottingham Playhouse and building work at the new Victoria Centre, both in 1964.

These hidden gems have been arranged into ten themes so you can choose how you want to make your exploration of twentieth century Nottingham, to better understand the city as it is today:

DISC ONE: INTRODUCTION;  THE HEART OF THE CITY: OLD MARKET SQUARE; CELEBRATION & ROYALTY; GOOSE FAIR; WAR & COMMEMORATION; LIFE ON THE WATER; A CITY OF CULTURE

DISC TWO: TEXTILES & THE LACE; RALEIGH; POST WAR; RESHAPING THE CITY; CHAMPIONS & HEROES

The production is a collaboration between MACE and the School of Media at the University of Lincoln and is one of a series 9 DVD titles entitled, ‘Midlands on Film’, celebrating the screen heritage of the Midlands. It has been made possible by the generous financial support of EM Media through the UK Film Council s Digital Film Archive Fund.

Nottingham on film is £16.99 + £1.50 p&p (£18.49)
